Semi truck tips over at gas station, spills large battery

RICHFIELD, Utah — A semi truck tipped over this morning at a gas station in Richfield this morning, causing a fire hazard after spilling its cargo, a large lithium ion battery. According to a post by Richfield City Police, the battery weighed 77,000 pounds and the crash posed an “extreme fire hazard” to the immediate area.
Lithium ion batteries, while very beneficial in modern electronics, do present a fire hazard when damaged or exposed to heat.

The truck turned over while turning left into a gas station on Main Street.
The area around the overturned truck was blocked off while workers underwent the difficult process of removing the extremely heavy battery. At about 2:00 p.m., the battery was removed from the road. Following the removal, Main Street was reopened to the public. Another street near the gas station will remain closed until a trailer can arrive to haul away the battery.
