Salt Lake County offers ‘Cool Zones’ to help with triple digit temperatures

SALT LAKE CITY — Areas in Salt Lake will be offered up as “Cool Zones” to help people escape the hundred-degree temperatures this week. 

“Cool Zones” are, according to a Salt Lake County press release, simply air-conditioned indoor spaces open to the public. 

The zones are located throughout libraries and senior centers throughout Salt Lake County. The senior centers are available to anyone above the age of 60. Libraries are open to anyone.

“Cool Zones” are free, with the exception of potential fees to access certain facility amenities and programs.

Staying safe in the heat 

Salt Lake County listed ways to stay safe during this week’s heat wave. 

• “Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water & liquids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
• Wear appropriate clothing – light colored & light weight fabrics work best.
• Stay indoors during midday when outside temperatures are hottest, usually between noon and 3 p.m.,
• Take it easy, avoiding exercise and strenuous activity when it’s hottest outside.
• Know the warning signs of heat-related illness, which include dizziness, nausea, rapid heart rate, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.”
