In a image from video provided by The Ocean Race, an orca moves along a rudder of the Team JAJO entry in The Ocean Race on Thursday, June 22, 2023, as the boat approached the Strait of Gibraltar. A pod of killer whales bumped one of the boats in an endurance sailing race, the latest encounter in what researchers say is a growing trend of sometimes-aggressive interactions with Iberian orcas. SALT LAKE CITY — As summertime arrives whales off the coast of Spain have been ramming boats. For a few years now Orcas swim around sailboats and yachts, smashing their nose into a ship’s rudder. Ramming it over and over in many cases, sinking these half-million dollar yachts. That’s 673 boats since 2020, and now scientists know why. They have discovered it’s just a new form of mischief for juvenile Orcas — because they’re bored.
There’s not much to do beneath the waves. No organized activities. No video games. So summer comes, they see the bottom of a boat, and like teenagers done with school, the Orcas cause a little mischief. I get it. I used to hang out under the streetlights with my friends as a kid.
What I don’t understand is the juvenile mischief in North Korea, where Kim Jong Un has stopped making nuclear threats as we start the summer. Instead, in an act familiar to any teen who’s ever thrown a water balloon at a car, he’s been sending hot air balloons over the border into South Korea. Instead of a basket at the bottom, they tie smelly garbage to the balloons and drop them on the enemy 260 times a day, leaving South Koreans relieved it’s not nukes, but wondering when this garbage will stop.
Sadly, as we all know, the only cure for summertime mischief… is fall.
