SALT LAKE CITY – The time for spring seed starting is here. KSL Greenhouse Hosts Maria Shilaos and Taun Beddes break down some of the basics that you need to know before starting seeds indoors.

The first thing they discussed was the lighting.
“A lot of times people will try to grow their seeds next to a window,” Beddes said. “If you’re going to do that, it has to be a south or a west window.”
When doing this, you have to be careful so that your seeds don’t get too warm. Beddes says that the temperatures can sometimes get quite high in March, so you will probably have to shift your plants around.
“The other thing you can do is build an inexpensive light bench,” he said. “It’s basically a frame using shop lights… You can hang a couple of shop lights and then put your seed trays underneath.”
The next thing to look at is the timing. For example, broccolis are the earliest cool-season plants, and they should have been started last week for mid-March planting. However, you can still start them in early March.
Seed-starting kits are also available. These can be convenient because they include the soil, the trays, and the tray covers. All you have to do is put the seeds in and water them. However, some kits may not give you enough room, so another suggestion from Beddes is to purchase pony packs or flats.
“Put your seeds in the pony packs and flat and grow the numbers you want so that you have enough of everything,” Beddes said.
The KSL Greenhouse is on every Saturday from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. You can follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and on our website.
