SALT LAKE CITY – Got a small yard? Don’t let that discourage you from planting! There are plenty of smaller fruits and vegetables you can grow in a limited space.

Horticulturist Liz Hamilton joined KSL Greenhouse Hosts Taun and Maria to share some of her ideas on how to make the most out of your small garden.

Gardening in Small Spaces…
35 minutes

Angel Hair spaghetti squash

Spaghetti squash is one of those vegetables that is not on the small side. That makes it difficult to grow in a tight space. An alternative is a tiny variety called the Angel Hair spaghetti squash. According to Liz, this is a single-serving size that grows like a zucchini, so it won’t take up too much space.

Small watermelons

Watermelon is a popular fruit, especially during the summer. Crimson Sweet is a well-known variety, but those get pretty big. If you’re looking for a mini variety, there’s one called Love Watermelon.

The Faerie watermelon is another small watermelon variety. It is yellow on the outside and bright pink on the inside when you cut it open.

“They’re really great for kids, and they just don’t take up very much space. You’re looking at 3 feet or less in diameter of growing space,” Hamilton said.

Fruit trees

Don’t forget about fruit trees! A lot of people tend to rule these out when they’re thinking about what they can plant in a small yard, but Liz says you don’t have to limit yourself.

She is growing two nectarine varieties in her yard: Arctic Babe and the Necta Zee. These will grow like a shrub to about 5 feet tall and wide maximum.

“One of the great things about those is they go well in containers because they’re so dwarf,” Liz said.

Some other peach tree options are Bonfire, Bonanza, and Pix Zee.

The KSL Greenhouse is on every Saturday from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. You can follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and on our website.
