SALT LAKE CITY – One of the most-asked questions on the KSL Greenhouse show is, “How do I get rid of bindweed?” So Taun and Maria went over some tips that can help with bindweed control.

The first step to bindweed control is making sure your lawn is healthy. A healthy lawn doesn’t mean that it’s over fertilized, mowed too short, or watered too often. It means you’re mowing it at three inches and watering it once or twice a week.

“In these kinds of lawns, bindweed may not even establish,” Taun said. “The seeds get in, and they may actually outcompete the runners that come up.”

There are some herbicides that will suppress bindweed. One of them is called Quinclorac, which KSL NewsRadio’s Dave Mecham had success using.

“Whether I’m spraying in the lawn or spraying it on that bare dirt, the Quinclorac is really good at just knocking it back,” Dave said.

“The best time to spray it in general is in the fall because those toxins in the herbicide go down to the roots,” Taun said.

If you notice bindweed invading your new flower bed, Taun suggests hand-pulling them once every three or four weeks. If there’s not much growing there, another option is mixing Roundup with a Spreader Sticker.

“It’ll come back, but it won’t for 45 to 60 days,” he said.

The KSL Greenhouse is on every Saturday from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. You can follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and on our website.

We want to hear from you.
