SALT LAKE CITY – The Mediterranean diet always seems to be one of the top three choices of diets that help you be the most successful. But there’s more to the Mediterranean way of eating than the so-called diet.

In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, Maria Shilaos spoke with Suzy Karadsheh, Founder of The Mediterranean Dish and New York Times Bestselling Cookbook Author, to learn all about Mediterranean food, from the diet myths to the health benefits.

Karadsheh says she doesn’t like to call the Mediterranean way of eating a diet because of what the word is known for. However, it indeed helps you keep your body healthier.

“If you’re eating the Mediterranean way, naturally you end up losing weight because you’re focusing so much more on wholesome ingredients,” Karadsheh said.

There is a Mediterranean diet pyramid that shows what kinds of foods to focus on more or less. The base of the pyramid shows more of the nutritious foods, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains. The very tip of the pyramid usually consists of sweets and red meats. Overall, there isn’t much ultra-processed food.

Eating this way is more of a lifestyle choice. Karadsheh calls it the “flavor party philosophy” because it doesn’t feel like a chore or a diet. It’s all about enjoying the food.

One of the questions that people tend to ask about eating the Mediterranean way is, “How do I follow the Mediterranean diet if I don’t live in that part of the world?”

Karadsheh says you don’t have to live in the Mediterranean. There are simple ways to follow this way of eating and living no matter where you’re located.
