SALT LAKE CITY – Are you having a hard time maintaining your motivation to exercise? Maybe you should try joining a group fitness class!
In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, Maria Shilaos spoke with Britt Johnson, fitness instructor at the Ogden Athletic Club, to learn how a group fitness setting can not only help you achieve your fitness goals, but also give you an opportunity to make lifelong friends.
Johnson summarized the benefits of group fitness in three words: accountability, motivation, and camaraderie.
“Every time I do a group class I’m able to get such a better workout,” she said.
While a lot of people may be self conscious about going to the gym and working out with other people, Johnson says there’s nothing to worry about. Everyone’s busy trying to get their own workouts in.
“We go in there and think all eyes are on us when in reality, everybody in the class is just trying to follow the instructor and trying to keep up,” she said.
That doesn’t mean there’s no one looking out for you. A group fitness class is a fun and safe space for everyone to make new friends. That’s what Johnson realized through some of her regulars.
“They’ve built this friendship around the class. They watch out for each other. It’s accountability in a positive way,” she said.
Going to a group fitness class also encourages you to go out of your comfort zone. There’s a high chance that you will see results in an area you probably never even thought about.
“You’re going to challenge yourself because someone’s introducing something new to you,” Johnson said.
