MOAB, Utah — The National Park Service said authorities are searching for a missing 76-year-old French man in Arches National Park.

He has been identified as 76-year-old Francis Userovici.

According to a press release, park rangers became aware of an abandoned rental vehicle on August 23 at Sand Dune Arch trailhead. They believe it entered Arches National Park on the morning of Aug. 16.

Userovici was last seen by his family on Aug. 13, per the NPS. He is about 5′ 6″ and has short grey hair. Additionally, the missing hiker wears glasses and may have a small red Nikon camera with him.

A ground search began on August 24. Other agencies including Grand County Search and Rescue and the Moab Interagency Fire Center are now involved in the search.

Anyone who may have seen the man has been urged to contact the National Park Service Tip Line. They can do so by email or by calling 888-653-0009.

Visiting a national park? Plan ahead

If you are planning on visiting a national park, there are a few things you should do before you go.

First, visit the National Park Service website to research the park you plan to visit. The website, or the NPS app, provides information that will be important to your planning process, such as if reservations are required and park maps.

In addition to planning where you will stay, what you will see, and the items you will take, the NPS also recommended formulating a backup plan in case of inclement weather, road closures, or other unexpected events.

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will be visiting for potential hazards and current conditions. Remember to stay on trails, even when taking photos.

Finally, it is recommended not to rely on your cell phone as a map. Packing a paper copy or alternative navigation device can help preserve your phone battery in case of emergency, and may be more reliable outside of cellular service.
