SALT LAKE CITY — The projected cost of Utah hosting the Winter Olympic Games in 2034 is a little less than the cost of the 2002 games, the planning committee said.

Utah hopes to be named as the host city for the 2034 Olympic games, and budget planning is already underway.

The Utah Committee for the Games presented its proposed budget on Monday. They said they hope to cover the $2.83 billion cost without taxpayer dollars.

Existing Olympic venues are a plus in the 2034 budget

Most of the facilities, for events like ski jumping, ice skating, and bobsledding, are already built.

But offsetting the savings are the added events expected in 2034 — namely, 40% more events as compared to 2002.

Organizers hope sponsorships will foot a big part of the bill. In addition to high-priced tickets, there will be 34,000 tickets for sale for $34.

Committee Chief Financial Officer Brett Hopkins said there are more things to take into consideration for the 2034 games.

“It’s increased in complexity over the years,” he said.” As there’s more events, there’s much more global outreach. We have the broadcast component, plus, the digital.”

Utah Committee for the Games President Fraser Bullock said the committee’s projection has factored inflation into the mix.

“And the reason we did this is so that we have an incredible amount of detail to support these numbers. They’re not just estimates, based on ’02. They’ve been built on an extreme amount of detail.”

If Utah is awarded the Games, opening ceremonies will be February 10, 2034.
