SALT LAKE CITY — It’s the first day of the school year for the Salt Lake City School District. And for some faculty and students, they’re starting in a different building after several schools were closed.
Edison Elementary Principal Richard Squire said every start of the school year can be nerve wracking. But especially after having schools closed due to accessibility concerns along with the declining student population.

“It’s even more so this year,” Squire said. “With the new staff.”
Squire said a lot of time, effort and planning went into making sure those teachers had a smooth transition to their new classrooms.
“Making sure that that they’re feeling comfortable and prepared and ready to go,” Squire said. “Do they have the computers that they’re going to need in their classroom?”
Squire also noted that similar attention was given to the students who joined the school following district closures. Last week, an orientation was held to help them acclimate to their new environment and address any questions they had.
