OGDEN, Utah — Ogden kids in need will get a backpack and school supplies thanks to a local charity giveaway event. This year, donations are down, and the need is up.
The giveaway event is part of Catholic Community Services’ Backpack Bonanza. Donated backpacks and other school supplies like notebooks and markers are given to kids in need.
Children who come to the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank on the day of the giveaway will receive those donated supplies. Any leftovers go to local schools.
Right now, the charity only has enough for about half of the expected kids.
“Every year, we’re at that point where we’re comfortable and have enough to supply the school districts,” Catholic Community Services Basic Needs Director, Randy Chappell said. “This year I worry that we might not have enough to fill the 600 kids coming in our entry.”
Chappell said monetary donations aren’t going as far as they used to. Additionally, more children are in need due to rising costs.
“Inflation has amped up and lately we’ve seen an increase, probably every last couple of years, of kids in need,” Chappell said.
If you’d like to donate a backpack, drop it off at the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank in Ogden by Saturday.
