SANDY, Utah — A 16-year-old Jordan High School student is dead after being stabbed in a parking lot on Friday night.
Sandy Police have confirmed that the incident took place in the parking lot of the Mountain America Expo Center on State Street. An Instagram post made by student body officers at the school said the student’s name was Kian Hamilton.
Jeff Haney with the Canyons School District said emails have been sent out to parents to explain what happened, along with information on how to help students grieve.
“Unexpected events like death can be difficult and, like adults, our students express emotions by grieving,” The email said. “Yet, our students may not demonstrate grief in the same manner.”
According to that email, counselors were available at the school on Saturday to help with students and teachers experiencing grief.
With the help of witnesses, Sandy police identified a suspect in the stabbing. The suspect is also a minor and has been taken into custody.
A candlelight vigil will take place on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. at the Jordan High School tennis courts.
