SALT LAKE CITY – How is your lawn coping with the recent triple-digit temperatures? If you’re seeing any yellow or brown patches, there are ways you can care for it to make it healthy and green again. Here are some summer lawn care tips from KSL Greenhouse Hosts Taun Beddes and Maria Shilaos.
Lawns suffer from heat stress quite often during this time of year. Fortunately, not all brown patches indicate that the grass is dead.
“If your lawn starts to brown out in this hot weather and it’s being irrigated, it’s just dormant. It’s not dead,” Taun said.
There’s still hope if your lawn turns brown between July and August. Once it cools down during mid- to late August, it will green back up again.
If you live on a slope or a hill, it’s especially tough to keep your lawn in good shape. Taun’s advice is to use a sprinkler clock, which has program settings labeled A, B, and C. Instead of irrigating the slopes for a full 20 to 40 minutes, cut that time in half. Then let it sit for two or three hours before using program B to do the other half. The key thing to remember here is to give the soil enough time to absorb the water.
“You don’t want sprinklers that emit a lot of water quickly because it will just run off. On your slope areas, you’re better off using low pressure or low flow sprinklers that are emitting that water over a longer period of time just to give it time to absorb it,” Taun said.
The KSL Greenhouse is on every Saturday from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. You can follow the show on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and on our website.
