LAYTON, Utah — A 59-year-old man has died after being shot by police in Layton on Wednesday night.
Lt. Travis Lyman with Layton Police Department said the Layton City dispatch center received calls from the man’s wife just after 9:40 p.m. The woman said her husband was in a distraught, suicidal state and that he had a gun.
According to Lyman, police were able to respond to an area near 2870 West Lindi Way and made contact with the woman through phone calls. From there, police had the woman leave the house to meet with police down the street.
Officers and crisis negotiators were able to make occasional contact with the woman’s husband, who was still in the house.
During conversations with the crisis negotiators, Lyman said the man made statements indicating that he intended on forcing a confrontation with police. From there, one police officer heard a gunshot go off inside of the house.
“A short time later the man came out of the front door of the house holding two guns, a rifle and a pistol,” Lyman said. “He was shot by the officers on the scene. They rendered life saving measures immediately after that until medical personnel arrived.”
According to Lyman, the time between the shots fired and the calls made by the man’s wife was 40 minutes.
The man was taken in critical condition to the Holy Cross Davis Hospital nearby. KSL TV’s Karah Brackin later reported that the man had died from his injuries.
