Lightning strike capsizes boat on Bear River, killing one person and injuring two

CORRINE, Utah — Lightning struck three people fishing on the Bear River early Sunday morning, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office.
After the lightning struck, the boat capsized into the river. All three people fell into the water. This happened at around 12:10 a.m., said Chief Deputy Sheriff Cade Palmer.
Two of those people made it to shore. They went to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of Sunday afternoon, one has been released from the hospital.
The third person in the boat went under the water. Search and rescue crews found that person at around 5:30 a.m. using sonar and rescue divers.
At this time, the names of the three individual’s are unknown. But the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that all are adult males.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragic loss, particularly the friends and family of the deceased. We are sincerely grateful to all the professionals and volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts to the search and successful recovery process,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Palmer says night fishing is common in that area of the Bear River, especially during a full moon.
